R15m for Gauteng smart city
The Gauteng government will spend R15 million on its smart city initiative over the financial year.
Speaking during his budget speech this morning, Finance MEC, Mandla Nkomfe, noted the ICT project would help boost growth in the province and drive entrepreneurship.
“The knowledge based economy is vital for driving the competitiveness and growth in the province. In support of these developments, R15 million will be invested in infrastructure which supports Smart City innovations during the 2012/13 financial year,” Nkomfe said.
This follows statements by Gauteng premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, revealing that the province would develop a smart city as it searches for ways to bridge the digital divide.
The initiative will be a partnership between the Department of Communications (DOC) and City of Johannesburg and will be housed at Nasrec in Johannesburg.
The multi-disciplinary ICT development aims to create sustainable economic activities through the use of ICT to improve the quality of life and decrease the cost of ICT, Mokonyane noted.
In September last year, the Gauteng Department of Economic Development submitted an innovation strategy which highlighted the role of the ICT strategy in innovation.
According to the submission, one of the key ideas within the Gauteng ICT strategy is for households to have access to high-speed internet connections. The innovation document also noted that additional communication and social networking structures would be investigated.
