Cell C hit by data fraud
Mobile operator, Cell C, has opened a case with police after it was hit by data bundle fraud.
The company says it has since been investigating an internal fraud case, after it discovered virtual vouchers had been stolen and sold.
“Cell C has opened a case of fraud with the South African Police Service. The fraud was detected early and measures were taken to prevent any further fraud from the identified sources,”
In a response to media reports about the fraud, the company says customer‘s data was not used.
“No customers have lost any bandwidth and the fraud in question has been committed against Cell C and not its customers,” the operator said in a statement
Cell C says it estimates that 44 000 data vouchers have been stolen. However, not all of these were activated. Some of these bundles have found their way into the market and have been purchased by customers and the operator has identified 453 data customers that have purchased these vouchers.
The operator says it initially suspended the affected accounts to ascertain where the customers bought the bundles - however, the bundles were reactivated since customers bought them legitimately.
The mobile operator says it has since put in measures to prevent future fraud cases.
Cell C has recently appointed former Vodacom CEO, Alan Knott-Craig, as the new chief executive. The operator is also embarking on an infrastructure investment programme as it tries to increase its market share.
