FNB warns against Easter fraud
FNB has advised consumers to be extra vigilant of scams where fraudsters will try to obtain information from them over the Easter period.
“Scammers are highly sophisticated, they are constantly creating new scams and customers need to be aware of these techniques so that they don’t fall victim to such scams,” says Ravesh Ramlakan, CEO of FNB Cellphone Banking.
FNB has warned against several common fraud scams, including phishing, smishing, vishing and sim swaps.
Phishing is a scam whereby customers are being tricked into exposing information via email.
Smishing is a scam whereby customers are being tricked into exposing information via SMS, with fraudsters requesting personal banking information. The SMS usually suggests that the customers’ details have been compromised and that the bank needs the personal information to stop the fraud.
Vishing is a new scam whereby customers are called and tricked into divulging their information. Through vishing, fraudsters claim to be bank officials claiming to verify or update customer’s details.
Sim swap fraud is a scam where the fraudster contacts the network operator and reassigns the cellphone number to a new SIM in order to gain access to confidential information.
“No banking facility will ever send an SMS or call a client requesting confidential information; or SMS a client regarding a problem with their account. Customers need to be aware of this, fraudsters are always using clever methods to entice customers into providing them with their personal banking information,” concludes Ramlakan
