Home Affairs to announce bank partnership
A joint effort between the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) to address bank-related identity fraud will be launched today.
According to the DHA, Home Affairs minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and chairperson of the SABRIC board, Cas Coovadia, will launch the Online Fingerprint Verification System in Pretoria later today.
“The system is aimed at fostering cooperation between Home Affairs and SABRIC in combating bank-related identity fraud and corruption that costs banks millions of rand,” the department said.
According to the department, the system will also result in cooperation between the department and SABRIC in technological developments in the field of identification and verification of details. Representatives from the banking industry and government officials are expected to attend Tuesday’s launch.
The launch of the system comes against the background of efforts to re-orientate Home Affairs as a security department. The system is therefore aimed at fostering co-operation between Home Affairs and SABRIC in combating bank-related identity fraud and corruption that costs banks millions of rand.
The department also says the system will also witness participation by both the Home Affairs Department and SABRIC in such areas as technological developments in the field of identification of persons and verification of their details.
