sabc 300x199 SABC gets R84m to improve technologyThe SABC has been allocated R84 million to improve its technological capabilities and educational programming by the Department of Communications (DOC).

Speaking during his budget speech to Parliament, Communications minister, Roy Padayachie, promised that key posts would also be filled soon.

As he promised to fill the appointments of the remaining four board members of the SABC, the minister also highlighted the importance of the public broadcaster in his speech.

“The SABC remains a critical focus for us. We have made significant strides in stabilising the corporation and the appointment of the group CEO will be concluded soon,” said Padayachie.

The minister also revealed the intentions of the broadcaster to launch its own 24 hour news services as it tries to reach more citizens and digital channels.

“The SABC further intends to launch a 24 hour news channel on the free to air space which will contribute to the diversity of views in society,” he said.

The DOC also says they are engaging the SABC on the future funding required to facilitate the introduction of new digital channels which will be broadcast to the population on a free to air platform.

“The number of TV channels will increase from 3 to 10. We will continue to engage the SABC with regard to the implementation of their turn-around strategy,” said Padayachie.

In 2009 the SABC had to be bailed out by government with over R1 billion after the public broadcaster got into financial turmoil. The broadcaster promised to pay back the money by 2014.

Another R41m has been allocated to Channel Africa whose future role and social obligations will be discussed as part of the broadcasting policy review process.

Another superhero in this Instant-On world

Having been in the IT management space for the past 18 years, I have seen a dramatic change in what is expected from IT.

I guess we all have. It reminds me of the song by Bob Dylan, “Things they are chang’in”. Having met three customer CIOs last week, the discussion was very similar with all of them.

IT has to provide more innovation and get closer to business, while driving down costs through standardisation, automation and consolidation.

IT certainly does need a new hero if it has to drive all this innovation and save costs in an ever more complex IT fabric. A new breed of CIO is needed to support the instant-on enterprise. Everything is demanded now, whether working from home and requesting new flights, submitting your tax reports, collaborating with friends and communities or giving your customers the information they need, on time, accurately and securely.

    Dinaledi schools go online

Following years of delay, the Department of Communications (DOC) has revealed that its e-connectivity programme for 125 Dinaledi schools and 1525 district schools is underway.

While the DOC failed to connect 250 schools in the 2008/09 financial year - it has now finalised MoUs and User Requirement Specifications as it looks to make a start on the initiative.

Following a meeting of government’s Infrastructure cluster, the DOC noted that the implementation of its e-connectivity programme for schools had kicked off.

In 2008, the department revealed plans to provide 250 schools with ICT connectivity in the 2008/09 financial year – but failed to connect any schools.
