Cosatu opposes Telkom Korean deal
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has condemned the proposed deal between Telkom and the Korean Telecom (KT) Corporation – saying it would lead to more job losses.
This follows an announcement by the operator on Friday revealing it was in talks with the KT Corporation – a move which could see the Korean company buy a strategic equity shareholding of 20% of
Telkom’s post-issue ordinary share capital for around R4.6 billion.
“Telkom stands out as an example of what can go wrong in privatisation. They have reversed all the gains they previously made as a public entity and the poor have gained nothing out of this process. Privatisation in Telkom has followed the classic path: worse services for the poor, high job losses, and improvements only for business and the rich,” Cosatu states.

LLU benefits “unsubstantiated” – Telkom
Telkom has blasted “unsubstantiated” comments on how Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) will increase competition, reduce broadband prices and generate revenue for all operators.
Speaking during the LLU public hearings held by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) – the operator says LLU advocates still need to explain the benefits of LLU to rural and under-serviced areas and reveal the costs involved.
“There is a universal understanding that LLU implementation is a complex issue and counter-productive. It should come as no surprise that Telkom is against LLU,” says head of regulatory affairs, Andrew Barendse.
Telkom yet to grasp LLU benefits – CellC
Cell C has taken on Telkom as the debate on Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) heats up – saying unbundling would bring job opportunities for young innovators in the country.
Speaking during the public hearings on LLU held by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) earlier today – the mobile operator disputed the position by Telkom that unbundling the local loop would lead to job losses in the industry.
“We see unbundling as having the potential to unlock value to the greater benefit of the economy. We need to encourage Telkom to see that LLU will fast track broadband provision in the country…We cannot be held back by fearing things we are not sure of. This process will bring a lot of innovation to the industry,” says executive head of regulatory affairs at CellC, Mothibi Ramusi.
