Despite recognising the value that cloud solutions would add to service delivery, departments are still grappling with several major concerns.
Speaking during a session at the 2011 GovTech conference in Durban, Government Technologies Officers Council (GITOC) members acknowledged the concerns on access, security and integration.
“With a large portion of the population not having access to ICT infrastructure and services and the prevailing high cost of bandwidth in the country, access to government services infrastructure through multiple electronic channels nationwide remains a challenge,” the council says.
While cloud computing is the latest buzz word as all sectors looking to implement cloud solutions – government CIO’s also recognised the technical and financial hurdles facing their departments.
The State Information Technology Agency ( SITA) has initiated an innovation competition to boost the local ICT skills base.
Called, Lethla La Diakanyo (Season of Ideas), the initiative is aimed at boosting the development of new applications that will help both the government departments and citizens.
Introducing the African code software challenge at the 2011 Govtech conference held in Durban, SITA’s executive for
government solutions, Nagalin Tuganadar, said the code challenge aims to source applications that will advance service delivery initiaves.
“We hope this code competetion will challenge individuals and test their innovative and creative skills for the befenit of all,” he explained.

The State IT Agency (SITA) has made remarkable progress, says the Public Service and Administration minister, Richard Baloyi.
Speaking at the 2011 GovTech conference in Durban today, Baloyi praised the progress made by the agency in the implementation of its turnaround strategy.
“We can proudly say that, having strengthened the governance mechanism and deployed men and women of substance at the top management of the agency, we have now begun to see remarkable
progress in SITA performance to achieve outcomes,” Baloyi says.
The theme for the 2011 GovTech conference is Connected government: working together to do more. The focus is on providing solutions for government approach, which is increasingly looking towards technology as a strategic tool and as an enabler for public service innovation and productivity growth
