First National Bank is offering its customers cellphone contracts with handsets at subsidised rates, in conjunction with Cell C.
The cellphone contracts are offered through the existing account opening process where the branch systems have been integrated with Cell C’s retail systems.
“This is yet another first from FNB and is in line with our philosophy of using innovation to add convenience and value to our customers’ lives. Customers will know instantly if they qualify for a cellphone contract. No additional paperwork is required and the cellphone application process is completed in a few minutes,” says Ravesh Ramlakan, CEO of FNB Cellphone Banking Solutions.
Cell C has taken on Telkom as the debate on Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) heats up – saying unbundling would bring job opportunities for young innovators in the country.
Speaking during the public hearings on LLU held by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) earlier today – the mobile operator disputed the position by Telkom that unbundling the local loop would lead to job losses in the industry.
“We see unbundling as having the potential to unlock value to the greater benefit of the economy. We need to encourage Telkom to see that LLU will fast track broadband provision in the country…We cannot be held back by fearing things we are not sure of. This process will bring a lot of innovation to the industry,” says executive head of regulatory affairs at CellC, Mothibi Ramusi.
Cell C is the latest operator to slash prices as competition heats up.
Following broadband price cuts by rivals 8ta, Vodacom and MTN – mobile operator, Cell C has now introduced offerings from 3c per MB.
The mobile operator unveiled 10GB and 20GB bundled broadband packages for the local market.
Yesterday, Vodacom announced revisions to its data services structure and pricing. The operator revealed that customers would pay 7 cents per MB for data consumption and get double their data for free with Night Owl.
CellC has announced that CEO, Lars Reichelt, would be leaving the company immediately, citing personal reasons. Government has welcomed the final number of RICA registrations – but warned that anyone who violates the Act will be prosecuted.
Speaking during a briefing earlier this morning, the Department of Communications (DOC) and Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJCD) welcomed final registrations for the Regulation of Interception and Communications Act (RICA).
On 30 June, Cell C reported it had registered 99.99% of contract customers, while 97% of prepaid subscribers were registered. MTN had 99.5% of contract subscribers registered and 97% of prepaid subscribers had complied.
Vodacom recorded 98.98% contract subscriber registrations and 95.2% of prepaid subscribers had complied.
With only a few hours to go until the RICA deadline, the Department of Communications (DOC) has urged those who have yet to register their Sim cards, to do so today.
