Infraco progress on course

The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) says capacity from the West Africa Cable System (WACS) will see Broadband Infraco provide its customers with capacity both on the national long distance and internationally.

Speaking at the New Age business briefing, Public Enterprises minister, Malusi Gigaba, added that issues which had plagued the state-owned enterprise were being resolved.

“We have worked persistently on sorting out Infraco’s internal capacity and reassessing its business case and the government’s role in this sector,” he said.

Broadband Infraco squanders R153m

Broadband Infraco has wasted R1.9 million over the past financial year, while another R151 million was recorded as irregular spending.

While the auditor general gave the state-owned enterprise a qualified audit for the spending, the accounting authority noted that it could not confirm whether that was all the money wasted over the 2010/11 financial year.

Despite meeting targets on pricing for telecommunication services – the annual report revealed the company had failed to achieve 100% broadband connectivity, availability and access and had recorded a loss of R206.9 million.
